Portrait of Andrés Monroy-Hernandez

Andrés Monroy-Hernández leads multidisciplinary research teams that build and study technologies designed to help people connect and collaborate in new ways, a field called social computing. His current interests center around two distinct areas: public-interest technology platforms, and social augmented reality experiences.

He is the director of the Human-Computer Interaction Lab at Princeton and an assistant professor in Princeton's Department of Computer Science. He is also an associated faculty at Princeton's Center for Information Technology and Policy, the Keller Center for Innovation, and the Program in Cognitive Science. He also serves on the board of Crisis Text Line. He teaches social computing and advises technology executives.

Andrés and his team have created and deployed social technologies used by millions of people, including the Scratch website—an award-winning online community for children to learn programming; Calendar.help—Microsoft's first hybrid AI assistant (now Microsoft Scheduler); Journeys & Notes—an urban exploration app released under the Microsoft Garage; Sana—a remote healthcare app designed to help nurses in Zambia in partnership with MIT; SFX—a tool to help researchers find scientific publications; and Significant Otter, an experimental biosignals watch app for couples.

He publishes his research in collaboration with faculty and students from computer science, education, communications, design, sociology, and psychology. His scholarly work has received best paper awards at CHI, CSCW, HCOMP, and ICWSM, the top human-computer interaction venues from the ACM and AAAI. He was the technical program co-chair for the 2018 ACM Conference on Computer Supported Collaborative Work and Social Computing (CSCW) and the 2019 ACM Collective Intelligence Conference (CI). He was an editor for CSCW 2019-2021 and is a member of the CSCW steering committee.

He was named one of the 35 Innovators under 35 by the MIT Technology Review, one of CNET's most influential Latinos in Tech, one of Boston's Emerging Leaders by the Boston Business Journal, and a Berkman Fellow by the Berkman-Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard. His work has also been awarded at Ars Electronica, the MacArthur Digital Media & Learning Competition, and featured in The New York Times, CNN, Wired, NPR, BBC, and El País, among others.

Andrés founded the human-computer interaction research team at Snap and was in the leadership team of the FUSE Labs, an incubation team at Microsoft Research. He also held faculty appointments at the University of Washington in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering and the departments of Human Centered Design & Engineering, and Communications. He has a Ph.D. and a master's degree from the MIT Media Lab and a bachelor's in electronics engineering from the Tecnológico de Monterrey in México.
